Important concepts
With ProPhoto, there are a variety of tools at your disposal as you consider how to present portfolio galleries to your potential clients. Your portfolio area could be as simple as linking to pages with images in them to building custom tiles that link to pages that have been assigned custom layouts. Below are listed the main tools one might consider using for a portfolio area.
- Gallery pages - Every gallery you create is its own custom post type and has its own unique URL. All your galleries are listed in "Galleries > All Galleries". So you don't have to insert a gallery into a page for it to have it's own url. These exist all on their own and can be linked to from menu links, graphics modules, grids or text links.
- Gallery display options - A gallery can display from its own page, be inserted into a standard WordPress post/page or added as a gallery module in a layout.
- Menu links - You can add menu links to any page or post or gallery page on your site. There are special link types for linking to gallery pages and regular WordPress pages. Create a dropdown by dragging a menu link inside another. See our menus overview.
- Templates - If your portfolio page requires a custom layout, one can be created in ProPhoto and assigned to that page. See our layouts overview.
Simple: Gallery pages
Often, simple is best. This video demonstrates a few of the most common, simple methods for creating a portfolio area. First, create one or more portfolio galleries in "Galleries > All Galleries". Then do one or more of the following steps.
- Create a menu link to your single portfolio gallery.
- Create a dropdown menu item linking to galleries feature different types of photography
- Create a portfolio page. Put a galleries grid into that page to link to your galleries. Link to that page from a menu item.
Easy: WordPress pages
When linking directly to gallery pages, as suggested in “Simple” above, the WordPress content area can only show the gallery. This displays alongside whatever module are in the default layout assigned to gallery pages. But what if you want to add more to the content of your portfolio gallery pages? This is still quite easy to do, but requires a different setup. First, create portfolio galleries in "Galleries > All Galleries" then follow some or all of the following steps.
- Create a new WordPress page for each portfolio gallery. Do this in "Pages > Add new". Insert galleries into corresponding pages. For example, you might have a “weddings” gallery that you insert into a page named “weddings.”
- Add a bit more content to the page in the page editor. This could be a grid, text, images or even another gallery.
- Create menu links to these WordPress pages.
- You may want to create a separate portfolio page. Into this page insert a “select posts/pages” grid. In that grid select the new portfolio pages you just made. Link to this page from a menu item.
- Add a new block in your home page layout into which you add this same select posts/pages grid module.
Intermediate: One custom layout
Your most powerful tool for building unique looking layouts is a ProPhoto "Layout." So if you want to build a really cool looking portfolio page, you may want to develop a layout for that page. This adds another layer to the “Simple” and “Easy” options. Again, before you do anything you need to create one or more portfolio galleries in "Galleries > All Galleries".
- Create a new layout by copying an existing (normally the default) layout. Rename the layout.
- Apply this layout to a galleries page created in "Pages > Add new".
- Edit the layout in in the visual builder. You’ll likely add one or more gallery modules or link to individual galleries with a grid module. If removing the space reserved for content from the WordPress page, remove the block that contains the WordPress content module.
- Link to this page from the menu or a graphics module.
Advanced: Multiple custom layouts
The most involved method of creating a portfolio area is to create a custom layout for each genre of photography. This gives you access to the ProPhoto layout options for each page. It takes more work, but gives you the most flexibility.
- Create your galleries in "Galleries > All Galleries." Create a page for each gallery in "Pages > All Pages."
- Create new layouts in the Visual Builder (by copying the default) to be assigned to each custom portfolio page you will create
- Assign the layouts to the pages. Build out the layout as you like. Link to these pages from your menu or a grid or one or more graphics modules.
- Create a unique tile that you will use to link to each gallery. Connect these tiles via a graphics module in a galleries layout and/or or in the home page layout. Alternatively, use a "selected posts" grid module to link to those pages with a grid.
